Manchester United have reinstated the season ticket of a fan suffering from dementia who saw his ticket canceled after five games without scanned access.
The story of the fan in question, who has not been named, went viral on social media on Sunday evening and was viewed more than a million times.
It was claimed that the fan, who has held a season ticket at Old Trafford for more than 45 years, has a paper season ticket as he does not own a mobile phone and as a result the QR code scanned on entry was printed on the paper alternative. .
There were frequent issues with the ticket and despite multiple exchanges with the club to repair the ticket because stewards were unable to scan the fan’s QR code – making it appear as if he had not attended the match – it was claimed after five matches without to be scanned into the ticket has been cancelled.
Mail Sport understands that the club has spoken to the family involved and while they believe the social media version of events does not fully reflect the complicated nature of this fan’s situation, his season ticket has been reinstated.
However, the family denies that adjustments have been made to facilitate fans’ access to Old Trafford to avoid a repeat of the situation.

This season, United have made a significant change in ticketing, with fans having to access digital tickets through United’s official app.
Tickets are locked to the device they use and the QR codes scanned when entering the venue are hidden until three hours before kick-off.
“This means that you, and more importantly other people, will no longer be able to access your tickets on another device,” said an email explaining the pre-season changes.
Additionally, fans have felt the pressure of another new ticket rule.
United fans must attend 15 of 19 home games in the 2024-2025 season or risk losing their seat at Old Trafford.
This is more than the number of matches needed in 2023-2024 for season ticket renewals, which was 14.
Referring to an official member, donating the cost of the ticket to the Manchester United Foundation or taking advantage of the club’s buyback program will count towards your total attendance.
