Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘tremendously high standards’ caused relations to sour during his cataclysmic second spell at the club.

In a tell-all interview with Sky Sports, Phelan reveals how things unfolded for the Portuguese star as he struggled to recapture the heights of glory he achieved during his first spell in Manchester.

“I remember certain moments where he pushed and pushed hard, and he didn’t get much of a response or much reaction. And there was frustration,” Phelan said.
