Man United make sly dig at Arsenal on Twitter before their FA Cup semi-final

‘Making memories with our mascots’: Man United make shrewd work at Arsenal by posting video of Erik ten Hag and several of their players high-fiving a row of mascots… days after the Gunners squad was heavily criticized for ‘ignoring their young fan

  • Man United tweeted a clip of ten Hag and his squad greeting the club’s mascots
  • Arsenal players were widely criticized over the weekend for ‘ignoring’ their mascot
  • United’s mascots were also treated to a thrilling penalty shootout at Wembley

Manchester United’s official Twitter account posted a video on Sunday afternoon launching a subtle dig at Arsenal and their social media team.

The clip, which was sent to United’s 35 million followers via the app, showed Erik ten Hag and his team greeting the club’s mascots ahead of the FA Cup semi-final against Brighton at Wembley.

The video was accompanied by the caption: ‘Making memories with our mascots’, referring to an earlier tweet from Arsenal last week.

Last Sunday, Arsenal players came under fire for a video the club posted on their social media channels, also titled ‘Making memories with our mascot’, which caused a storm online.

As the Arsenal side entered the dressing room for their eventual 2-2 draw with West Ham, they were met by an eight-year-old girl and her father who waited patiently to have her souvenir shirt signed.

However, the Arsenal players obliged, but their lack of engagement with the young fan sparked outrage online.

The clip immediately went viral on Twitter as thousands of people couldn’t understand why none of the players seemed to want to speak or even make eye contact with the mascot.

The Gunners were accused of being “entitled, overpaid and rude,” but the girl’s father insisted the footage was just a “tiny window” into her day.

Mikel Arteta also had to defend his players when asked about the matter at a press conference later in the week.

Arteta insisted: ‘First of all it comes from Arsenal TV and when you talk about connection and what we’ve built with our supporters, it’s for what we do every day.

“You speak to (her) parents and they had a great day. So you just saw a fragment of a photo – what happened before and after that no one saw and I don’t think it’s fair.’

At Wembley, United’s mascots were treated to a penalty shootout victory over Brighton to set up a Manchester Derby in the FA Cup final in June.
