Manchester United reportedly first approached Harry Kane at Tottenham Hotspur as they set their sights on signing the striker this summer.
United are desperate to bolster their attack for next season after Cristiano Ronaldo left the club in November and have identified Kane as one of their main targets.
Aware that negotiations with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy are likely to be tricky, they have taken an early approach to gauge his position on the possible sale of Kane, according to The Telegraph.
Kane has one year left on his contract with Spurs and is unlikely to renew at the end of the season given Tottenham Hotspur’s current struggles.
Spurs were beaten 6-1 by Newcastle on Sunday and look set to miss out on next season’s Champions League, being without a permanent manager after Antonio Conte left the club last month.

Levy has previously turned down multiple Manchester City offers for Kane in 2021, and is expected to charge a sizeable fee to even consider letting Kane leave this time.
While it is believed he would be willing to let Kane move abroad for around £80 million, Levy could ask for at least £100 million to allow the 29-year-old to join a Premier League rival.
Kane has made it clear in the past that he wants to emulate Alan Shearer’s record of 260 Premier League goals, suggesting he would prefer to stay in England.
United would like to know exactly what Levy wants to ensure they don’t waste time this summer and potentially miss out on alternative options such as Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.
The Red Devils travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday, where the pressure on Levy is increasing after the Spurs capitulation at St James’ Park.
In fourth place, United are six points above Tottenham heading into the game, although Erik ten Hag’s men have two games to go on their opponents.

His side have also thrived in cup competitions this season, winning the Carabao Cup in February, while booking their place in June’s FA Cup final.
Levy recently insisted that Kane could win silverware at Spurs, but the club has now been trophy-less for 15 years.
Meanwhile, United are fighting for silverware again and this could appeal to Kane.
Levy now faces the tough decision of possibly selling Kane to a direct rival this summer, or losing him for free next year.
