Man United FINALLY break their silence on Antony’s domestic violence allegations, insisting they are ‘taking the matter seriously’ amid claims he threatened his ex while she was pregnant, damaged her breast implants and severed her finger
Manchester United have broken silence over domestic violence allegations against Antony, with the attacker being the subject of a police investigation.
The 23-year-old winger was dropped from Brazil’s squad on Monday night, just days after Mason Greenwood left United on loan for Getafe following a six-month club investigation.
Antony has denied claims by his ex-girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin that he assaulted her while she was pregnant, damaged her breast implant, cut off her finger with a glass and threatened to throw her out of a speeding car.
United have issued a statement to confirm the club is aware of the allegations against the 23-year-old.
“Manchester United acknowledge the allegations against Antony and note that police are investigating,” the club statement said.
Man United stressed that the club takes the allegations against Antony seriously
Pending further information, the club will not comment further.
“As a club we take this matter seriously, taking into account the impact of these allegations and the subsequent coverage that will have on survivors of abuse.”
Antony had released a statement in June saying he had been falsely accused of domestic violence by his former girlfriend.
The Brazilian accepted in a recent statement that his relationship with his ex-partner was “tumultuous,” but insisted he “never committed any physical aggression.”
Man United faced pressure to act after being caught in another storm of domestic violence in the wake of Greenwood’s departure.
The club decided the 21-year-old can no longer play for them after being suspended for 18 months following allegations of attempted rape and assault, even though the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges in February. Greenwood denies the allegations.
Female Fans Against Greenwood’s Return, formed to campaign against the possibility of him wearing the United shirt again, responded to the allegations against Antony by his former partner and called on clubs to do more to tackle the problem.
