Man United face making a £28MILLION loss on Eric Bailly after poor loan spell with Marseille

Man United suffer a £28M loss on Eric Bailly after a poor loan spell at Marseille… as Real Betis express interest in reviving the defender’s career

  • Man United are ready to cut their losses with the injury-prone Ivorian defender
  • The 29-year-old had a poor year on loan at Marseille, making 17 league appearances
  • La Liga outfit Real Betis are reportedly keen to bring Eric Bailly back to Spain

Manchester United want just £2 million for Eric Bailly, while La Liga side Real Betis are expressing interest in signing the injury-prone Ivorian.

The 29-year-old spent last season on loan at Marseille but made just 17 appearances for the French side after struggling with injuries and serving a seven-match suspension for a tackle that left Hyeres’ Almike Moussa N’Diaye hospitalized recorded.

With Marseille opting to play the defender two fewer games than the number a permanent signing would have required, a return to La Liga looks to be his best chance of making it to the top tier next season.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo report that Real Betis are interested in offering Bailly the chance to play for a third team in the country after making his debut with Espanyol in 2014.

Bailly is regarded as a favorite of the club’s new sporting director Ramon Planes, who has been following the defender closely since his days in Espanyol’s youth academy.

With Bailly’s departure, his disappointing seven-year stay in England comes to an end. United bought the central defender from Villarreal for £30 million in 2016, where he starred for the Yellow Submarine in his lone season at Castellón

But despite his obvious abilities, Bailly has been hampered by gnawing injuries that have seen him make just 12 appearances in six Premier League seasons at Old Trafford on average.

Bailly’s most productive year in Manchester came in a debut campaign under Jose Mourinho that brought League Cup and Europa League honours.

He last played for the Red Devils in a 3-1 win against Burnley at Old Trafford on 30 December 2021.
