Manchester United defender Willy Kambwala has agreed a deal worth £9.9million with Villarreal.

The Spanish club will pay an initial fee of £4.7million plus up to £5.2million in add-ons for Kambwala, who has signed a five-year contract.

United has a buy-back option for the next three years and a significant portion of any sale price.

The 19-year-old player had 11 months left on his contract at Old Trafford and refused to sign a new deal.

United’s decision reflects the club’s policy of making money from academy graduates who will not become regular starters or whose contracts are expiring and can therefore leave for nothing.

Kambwala signed from French club Sochaux in October 2020 and played ten games for the first team under Erik ten Hag last season.

But United are looking to sign two new centre-backs this summer, in the form of Jarrad Branthwaite, Matthijs De Ligt and Leny Yoro, and have recently given experienced Jonny Evans a new one-year contract.
