Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has broken his silence on Erik ten Hag’s sacking to wish the Dutchman well.

Fernandes posted a tribute to Ten Hag on social media, just an hour after his dismissal was confirmed in an official club statement.

United’s dismal 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Sunday proved to be the last straw as the seniors at Old Trafford ran out of patience.

Mailsport understands that the team was informed of Ten Hag’s dismissal at the same time as the public announcement and that Fernandes was the first to respond.

“Thanks for everything boss!” he wrote on Instagram. ‘I appreciate the trust and the moments we share together, I wish you all the best in the future.

‘Even knowing the past period is not that [sic] It was great from all of us. I hope you fans can remember the good things the manager has done for our club!’

United are fourteenth after a faltering start to the Premier League season and three straight draws in the Europa League further increased the pressure on Ten Hag.

Ten Hag received notice of his dismissal on Monday morning and is leaving after two and a half years in charge. He won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, the club legend who was hired this summer as part of Ten Hag’s new backroom staff, will take on interim responsibility in the short term.

United’s search for a permanent replacement is already underway Mailsport has reported that the club has already spoken to several potential candidates.

Discussions were held with former Barcelona head coach Xavi, while players such as Ruben Amorim, Edin Terzic and Thomas Frank have admirers at Old Trafford.

A club statement confirming Ten Hag’s dismissal said: ‘Erik ten Hag has left his role as manager of Manchester United’s men’s first team.

‘Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, including winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

‘We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him the best for the future.’
