Manchester United have reportedly agreed personal terms for Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt ahead of a potential summer transfer.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag hopes his former Ajax defender can close a deal.

Talks are underway with Bayern Munich over a possible £42million deal.

According to the Manchester Evening NewsMan United have now reached a verbal personal agreement with De Ligt.

Central defense is seen as an important position that the Red Devils need to strengthen this summer.

De Ligt shone for Ten Hag’s Ajax team before leaving the club in 2019 to join Juventus

The 24-year-old defender played 30 games in all competitions for Bayern last summer

De Ligt would like to work with his former Ajax manager Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

After Ten Hag moved to Ajax in 2018, he made De Ligt the club’s youngest ever captain. The club won both the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup in the 2018-2019 season.

In the same campaign they also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.

De Ligt joined Juventus that summer for £65.6million, before moving to Bayern Munich three years later for a reported £68million.

United are prepared to offer the 24-year-old De Ligt a five-year contract if they can reach a deal with Bayern Munich.

The Red Devils would like De Ligt to play on the right in central defence if he joins the club.

De Ligt is currently part of the Dutch selection for the 2024 European Championship. On Wednesday, Ronald Koeman’s team will play against England in the semi-final.

The central defender has not featured in the five games he has played at the tournament so far.

De Ligt is expected to have three weeks of vacation after the tournament.
