Horror as police shoot man dead in carpark of Manning Base Hospital in Taree

An allegedly armed man pulled a gun on police before being shot dead outside a regional hospital.

The confrontation happened at about 12.55pm on Thursday in the car park of Manning Base Hospital in Taree on the NSW north coast.

“The man allegedly pointed a firearm at the officers present, after which he was shot by the police,” a police statement said.

‘Officers immediately rendered aid to the man before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.

‘The man – probably in his thirties – was taken to hospital, where he died a short time later.’

No police officers or other members of the public were physically injured.

Thirty minutes before the shooting, police were called to Rouse St in Wingham after reports a man had fired shots into the air.

Those calls came five minutes after police were called to Summerville St in Wingham for a welfare check concern.

Officers from the Manning-Great Lakes Police District attended the scene at Rouse St.

They searched for the man before the confrontation at Manning Base Hospital.

As with all incidents where someone is killed by a police officer, a critical incident investigation team from the State Crime Command’s homicide unit will now investigate what happened.

That investigation will also be subject to an independent review.
