A man was shot dead in the parking lot of a regional hospital.

Police said they “engaged in conversation” with a man in the car park of Manning Base Hospital in Taree on the NSW north coast about 12.55pm on Thursday.

“During the confrontation, the man allegedly pointed a firearm at the officers present, after which he was shot by the police,” the police statement said.

‘Officers immediately rendered aid to the man before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.

‘The man – believed to be in his 30s – was taken to Manning Base Hospital where he died a short time later.’

No police officers or other people were physically injured in the incident.

Thirty minutes before the shooting, police were called to Rouse St, in Wingham, after reports a man had fired shots into the air.
