A man has been shot and killed by police after allegedly stabbing an officer in the chest.
Just before 8am on Friday, two officers were called to a house in Wickham, about 2 miles from Newcastle, following reports of theft.
The two officers were then allegedly threatened by a man with a knife upon arrival.
The man is said to have stabbed one officer in the chest and the second officer had injuries to her hands.

The man was shot and died on the spot. He has yet to be formally identified.
The two officers were taken to John Hunter Hospital in serious but stable conditions.
The circumstances of the incident, including the police officer’s shot, are now under investigation.
