Fans waited at the TPC River Highlands clubhouse for the chance to catch a glimpse and get an autograph from world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
They got something in return from the best golfer in the world, who celebrated his birthday on Friday while playing the Travelers Championship.
After the day was postponed due to bad weather, fans lingered and shouted joyfully as they saw him walking towards him with a box in his hand.
“How was the cake?” a fan shouted at the golfer, who was walking his newborn son in a stroller.
‘You can have it… We’re not going to eat it, there was a piece in it [and] they gave me the whole pie,” Scheffler replied.
Scottie Scheffler brought autographs – and even a cake – to fans waiting for him in Connecticut
Scheffler ate just one slice before handing the cake to the fans and signing the box for them
To make sure he wasn’t joking, Scheffler said, “You all take the cake seriously.”
The fans even had Scheffler sign the cake box, as well as a random Dominos pizza box amid the signature hats and photos taken.
It was a kind gift from the tournament organizers to give Scheffler a cake from a local bakery – specifically Mozzicato’s in nearby Hartford – to help him celebrate turning 28 years old.
So far for the Travelers, Scheffler has shot 65-64 to sit at 11 under for the tournament.
He is just two shots behind fellow birthday celebrant Tom Kim, who sits at 13 below the top of the leaderboard for the tournament.
