Sailor killed after two yachts collided in Sydney Harbour is identified – as new details emerge about the horror crash
The man who died in a horror boat collision in Sydney Harbor has been identified as a successful businessman and experienced sailor.
Nico Lassing, 51, suffered serious chest injuries after two yachts collided during the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club summer races about 6.30pm on Friday.
Police and paramedics rushed to the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYAC) but were unable to revive Ms Lassing.
The 51-year-old was an experienced sailor who had spent the days leading up to his tragic death as a crew member on other yachts.
Both skippers involved in the crash were taken for mandatory testing, while the yachts were seized to undergo a mechanical examination.
The investigations are part of a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding last week’s fatal accident.
It is understood the two vessels collided shortly before the start of the preliminary Cabbage Tree Island Race, the final offshore race contested by competitors before the Sydney to Hobart race begins on Boxing Day.
The CYCA said the boats were taking part in an unrelated race.

“A tragic accident occurred in Sydney Harbor last night, resulting in the death of a crew member when two boats competing in races unrelated to the CYCA collided,” the statement said.
‘As one of the boats is usually moored at the CYCA, police used our facilities to moor the yachts involved and interview witnesses.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased crew member. Our thoughts are also with the crews and everyone affected by this devastating event.”
Officers from the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command are being assisted by members of the Marine Area Command as investigations continue.
Residents of waterfront homes in Watsons Bay and Vaucluse who may have CCTV footage of the incident have been urged to come forward.
Daily Mail Australia has contacted the Commonwealth Bank – where Mr Lassings was managing director of Payments Technology – for comment.
