Man, 72, is killed by escalator after getting his suit jacket caught in handrail

A man has died in Japan after his jacket became trapped between the handrail of an escalator.
Mamoru Suzuki, 72, collapsed at JR Mito Station, in the city of Mito in eastern Japan, after the back of his suit jacket became stuck in an escalator connecting the station platform to the ticket gate.
The man from Hitachi, a city in Ibaraki Prefecture, was alert when he was found at the escalator exit around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, but later lost consciousness and was taken to a local hospital, local media reported.
Mr. Suzuki was confirmed dead, but the cause of death has not yet been determined.
Police are currently reviewing the station’s CCTV footage to find out what happened before Mr Suzuki’s death.

This comes after a 12-year-old boy tragically fell 50 feet down an escalator in India after his pants reportedly got stuck in the handrail while he was playing at the top.
The boy fell on June 22, 2019 at the Nucleus Mall in Ranchi, in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand.
Footage shows him playing at the top of the escalator in the shopping center as other customers go up and down. He then tips over the edge and loses his grip before falling.
The video, filmed from CCTV in the shopping complex, initially shows the boy standing at the top of the escalator as other customers walk past.
He places his hand on the motorized rail in an apparent attempt to stop it before he is joined by two other children standing next to him.
But he suddenly lurches forward and cannot prevent himself from falling over the edge, despite his frantically trying.
He is still holding on with his right hand above the fall to the floor below.
The boy is then briefly dragged down as the escalator descends, before losing his grip and disappearing from view as he falls.
Vishvendu Jaipuriar, a local journalist who witnessed the incident, said, “The boy rubbed his body against the conveyor belt of the escalator.
‘He playfully tried to stop with all his might. His trousers got stuck in the belt and were pulled along.’
