A man was killed in an early morning drive-by shooting outside a gym in south-west Sydney, and a witness reported hearing as many as ten shots.

The 40-year-old man was shot dead outside the Elite Fight Force gym on Carlingford Street, in Sefton on Tuesday morning.

Paramedics desperately tried to revive the man, but were unable to save him and he died at the scene.

David had been working at a nearby store and said he heard about ten shots.

“Within minutes there was a load of ambulances and police everywhere and we saw a man on the ground who was not in a good way,” he told 2GB.

It was terrifying.

David said he initially heard about five loud bangs before he heard a car speeding away. He then heard another series of shots.

The witness said the victim was sitting in a black Mercedes SUV when he was shot.

The gym announced that it would be closed on Thursday.

The gym posted a message on Instagram that read: ‘Asalamu alaykum (peace be upon you in Arabic).

‘We are very sorry for any inconvenience. Elite Force Force will be closed today and all classes will be canceled for the day.

“Please bear with us and keep up to date with our stories for any new announcements.”

Daily Mail Australia understands that the gym was not open at the time.

A crime scene has been established and police are investigating.
