The 84-year-old woman and her son were visiting the city of Mamallapuram, in southeastern India, on Monday.
The couple went to a temple located on the shore of the city, and visited a beach next to it, and both decided to enter the sea of the Bay of Bengal.
Authorities say a strong tide pulled the woman away from the beach.
Her son failed to save her, and an hour later her body washed ashore.
