Man exposes the sad truth about The Voice – and hundreds of Aussies agree with him

An Australian has revealed the sad truth about The Voice and hundreds of music fans agree with him.

The man, who has just 94 followers on TikTok, has racked up more than 3,400 likes and hundreds of comments on a simple video in which he explains his “hate” for the reality singing show.

“I cannot express how much I loathe this show,” he captioned a short clip from The Voice Australia, which launched its 12th season last week and features Guy Sebastian, Adam Lambert, LeAnn Rimes and Kate Miller-Heidke as coaches.

“12 years and not a single artist has emerged from it,” it said.

“How can you, as a beginning artist, think it’s a good idea to apply for this show?”

The vast majority of the more than 200 Australians who commented on TikTok agreed with him.

“The jury consists of artists who have proven themselves,” one person wrote, to which the video maker replied: “That guy hasn’t been that relevant in the charts for a while, but I have to admit he has a damn good voice.”

“Glorious karaoke,” said another.

“Where else would the local RSL pick up a free artist from 9pm to midnight?” asked a third.

“I only watch because of Adam,” one person wrote.

‘The music industry in Australia doesn’t support local artists either! And neither does the radio! When was the last time you heard an Australian on the radio? This is just a glorified version of karaoke!’ exclaimed another,

“Contestants should be given an instant Logie for pretending to know who LeAnn Rimes is,” joked one Australian.

LeAnn entered the TV singing competition this year after local singer Jessica Mauboy, Britain’s Rita Ora and American hitmaker Jason Derulo left their big red chairs.

Australian Idol winner Guy, who first competed on The Voice in 2019, is the last remaining judge in the 2023 line-up.

Despite The Voice Australia seemingly having a chance to compete for The Block in the ratings this season, industry insiders say it may not be enough to convince new coach LeAnn, who also appears on The Voice UK, to make regular appearances Down Under.

According to a TV insider, some of the show’s younger contestants were initially “hesitant” about choosing LeAnn as their new coach because “they didn’t know who she was.”

However, Adam has “proved popular”, the source told New Idea, because he is an example of how to build a career after winning the competition.

“As an aspiring artist, I have to explain this logic to 100 friends, family, coworkers, etc. every year when they tell me I have to audition,” another angry viewer responded on TikTok.

“I totally agree with you that the judges will take it like, ‘Oh, you’re a star, you’re going to go far,’ and you’ll never hear or see from them again,” reads another comment.

“They always do that ‘I will guide you forever’ thing and I bet you never hear from them again once the show is over,” the TikToker responded.

A disgruntled The Voice fan has theorised that previous winners, such as Lachie Gill, will likely never hear from their mentors again

One fan theorized that previous winners, such as Lachie Gill, probably don’t hear from their mentors again after the show ends

Melbourne singer-songwriter Lachie Gill, who won the 11th season of The Voice Australia in 2022, may have already proven this theory.

The former schoolteacher, who was coached by British singer Rita and received $100,000 and a recording contract with Universal Music Australia, revealed in November that he had not heard from the pop star since.

“We got a few messages straight after the show, but I haven’t heard from Rita since,” Lachie told Sydney Confidential in November.

“I haven’t reached out to her either, so I don’t know if she would respond. I hope she would, but I never wanted to jump on her bandwagon and get there.

He added that he would have liked to be coached by Guy because of their common interests.

‘He’s Australian and I knew I’d see him in the scene in the future, but he was blocked by Rita. I understand how busy her life would be. Sometimes I think it would be cool to chat to her, but it doesn’t really bother me that much.’

It looks like Guy Sebastian is starting to tire of his role as a judge on The Voice, as claims emerge that the singer is a 'total diva' on set

It looks like Guy Sebastian is starting to tire of his role as a judge on The Voice, as claims emerge that the singer is a ‘total diva’ on set

Despite the high turnover of coaches – 20 since the show premiered in 2012 – Guy’s stint is only second to Delta Goodrem, who holds the record with eight seasons at Channel Nine.

Guy has faced a fair amount of criticism in the comments, but it wasn’t because of the accusations of “total diva behaviour” that Ny Breaking Australia exclusively revealed.

“I stopped watching after Guy Sebastian’s brother won. Isn’t the point of the show to give people with no industry connections a chance at a record deal?” said another former fan.

Channel Nine was accused of rigging The Voice by using a loophole to get around the ‘no family’ rule after Guy’s younger brother Chris won the competition in 2020.

Chris Sebastian’s highlight was met with outrage and controversy as he emerged victorious, beating favourites Siala Robson and Johnny Manuel.

According to the comments on this latest video, fans have neither forgiven nor forgotten him. “Johnny had one of the best voices I’ve ever heard and Guy Sebastian’s brother still won,” wrote another.

“I’m currently on the show,” Yorke Heath wrote as the current contestant joined in the cheeky comments.

The Adelaide singer defended his participation in the series, saying the responsibility of becoming a star is “the job” of the artist, not the TV show.

“It’s given me a lot of publicity, but besides that, my job is to build a career! Don’t expect them to do everything for you, I guess.”

However, this did little to change hearts or minds, as several viewers responded to Yorke’s comment with words like: “Sad.”

“They are also desperate for contestants,” another fan added, while someone else pointed out that fans can tell the producers are struggling as they compete with the revamped version of Seven, Australian Idol.

“You can see that. This year’s candidates are very weak and get 4 chair turns,” said one of the comments.

“Australian Idol was way better,” said another.

Many other comments complained that the show was a vehicle to promote the judges’ new albums and the age-old complaint that each contestant’s “non-negotiable sob story” took up more time than the actual performances on the episode.

A handful of The Voice fans defended the show. The only positive comments mentioned were Celia Pavey, also known as Vera Blue, who was the runner-up on The Voice in 2013 but later won an ARIA Award.

Previous winners of The Voice Australia include: Karise Eden (2012), Harrison Craig (2013), Anja Nissen (2014), Ellie Drennan (2015), Alfie Arcuri (2016), Judah Kelly (2017), Sam Perry (2018), Diana Rouvas (2019), Chris Sebastian (2020), Bella Taylor Smith (2021), Lachie Gill (2022), Tarryn Stokes (2023).
