Kilcunda Surf Beach: Tragedy as man loses his life trying to retrieve a pair of sunnies amid a spate of drownings in one Australian state

A man has died at a popular surfing beach in Victoria after being thrown into the sea while trying to retrieve a pair of sunglasses.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Kilcunda Surf Beach, southeast of Melbourne, about 8.30pm on Friday after reports a man had been swept out to sea.

The man was in the water with a group of friends when he tried to retrieve a pair of lost sunglasses, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

An hour later he was found unconscious on the beach.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, has not been formally identified and his death is not considered suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

On the same day, a man’s body was found in a creek in Coburg around 2:30 p.m.

Police have appealed for information to help identify the man, who was last seen wearing a light-colored shirt, black shorts and black runners.

Another man was pulled to shore about 3.30pm on Friday after being found in the waters around Phillip Island, off the coast of Victoria.

CPR was begun, but he died at the scene.

Police also confirmed that a report would be prepared for the coroner, while the man has yet to be formally identified.
