The unnamed man took to Reddit to reveal that he has been a pet owner for the past seven years, adding that his dog has been his ‘support’ during tough times
The message was captioned: ‘Dog has slept in my bed for seven years’.
At the beginning of the message he explained: ‘My girlfriend recently moved in and my dog has been next to me for seven years since he was 12 weeks old.
‘She pushed my dog against his chest with both hands the other day and gets a bit angry because he’s sleeping in the bed. At first it was about the hair, so I washed a lot of sheets, blankets and pillowcases to have backups and always have a sheet over the bedding we use.”
Although the man thought consistently changing the bedding would help, his girlfriend was still not on board while his dog was sleeping in their bed.
He added: ‘I don’t like her being aggressive towards my dog and find it a turn-off. She thinks my dog is jealous and doesn’t like her. I think she’s being dramatic and I will definitely get rid of her before he does.
“He has been my healing in life and has taught me a lot about anger and not being depressed, keeping him safe, happy and nourished.
“He’s like my son, brother and best friend. He has pushed me to suck it up when I was depressed, and he has been my rock.”
At the end of the post, the man wondered if he was wrong for wanting to break up with his girlfriend.
People on the internet flooded the comments section as they were fiercely divided over what to do
He said, “Should I give her an ultimatum or just move on to someone who respects my boundary? And am I crazy for putting my dog, who has slept next to me for seven years, in a new relationship?’
People on the internet flooded the comments section as they were fiercely divided over what to do.
Many people claimed the man was overreacting.
One person said: ‘I would feel so unwelcome and rejected if I were her. I’m a big dog person. Of course you want to be loyal to your best friend.
“But if you’re trying to have a satisfying relationship with a human, and you’re actively moving him to a lower place/priority than your dog, that’s a pretty substantial message that he doesn’t seriously want to be in a relationship.”
Someone else added: ‘OP is not ready for a relationship.’
“OP needs to get a grip and get his dog out of his bed. So disgusting and weird. I can’t do it with the Americans and their dog culture, it’s actually bizarre,” said another.
Another user wrote: ‘Yes. You are the hole. She’s a human, she needs space in the bed and if she has to get your dog out of the way then that’s what happens. Get a life, get a clue and buy a dog bed.”
However, other people on the internet agreed with the friend and praised him for standing up for his dog.
‘I’ve dumped so many girls in the past because of the way they behaved with my dog. It took a few years, but eventually I found a wonderful woman who was great with my dog. Don’t settle, that dog deserves better,” someone said.
Someone else said: ‘Down the hole and dump her.’
Another person wrote: ‘Just get another girlfriend. And a king size bed. Not that hole.”
