A man has died after being crushed by a hydraulic urinal in London’s West End this afternoon, the Metropolitan Police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the scene. at 1.10pm at the junction of Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road outside the Palace Theater in London’s theater district, after reports of an industrial accident involving a public urinal.

Firefighters managed to free the man with a winch before he was handed over to the care of ambulance crews, but he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The London Ambulance Service said: “Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of our teams, one man died at the scene.”

Met Police had previously told MailOnline: ‘Police were called at around 1.10pm on Friday 27th January for a seriously injured man at Cambridge Circus, W1.

The man is believed to have sustained crush injuries while working on a “telescopic urinal” at the scene.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called today (January 27) at 1:05pm to inform us of an incident in Shaftesbury Avenue, Charing Cross.

“We dispatched a number of resources to the scene, including an ambulance team, members of our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), members of our tactical response unit, and a medic in a rapid response car. We also send the London Air Ambulance.

The incident took place outside the Palace Theatre, where the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child show is presented.

The theater is currently unsure if tonight’s 7pm performance will take place.

A spokesman for the theater’s stage door department said: “At the moment we don’t have the information to give people and it’s an ongoing situation.” We will try to notify as much in advance as possible.

London Fire Brigade told MailOnline: ‘Firefighters have been called to a person trapped in Charing Cross Road in central London.

The man trapped below street level under a hydraulic urinal in Cambridge Circus has been freed. He has been left in the care of the Ambulance Service.

“The brigade was called at 1305. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Soho, Euston and Dowgate fire stations are on the scene.”
