Rodri revealed that Pep Guardiola had instructed him to ‘step forward’ during their win over Inter Milan

“I think it’s special, it’s part of football to enjoy moments like this – especially as a defensive midfielder you don’t feel like you’re going to be decisive.

“When I go on vacation now, the fans sing my song. So life has changed for me in a way. But I hope I can still have the composure with which I have always been characterized. I would like to stop for a few months to analyze what happened, but everything is moving very quickly.’

Rodri admitted that he had been below average during the showpiece final and that Guardiola had reprimanded him for an unusually passive performance before becoming the unlikely hero.

“I know what I can bring to the team and I was not happy with my performance,” he added. “In a final, the team needs the best from you, so I was self-critical.

“The coach was very direct at that point and said, ‘You’re taking a step forward.’ In these moments you have to be strong, accept the criticism when the team is having a hard time.

“I just laugh at what we’ve achieved – sometimes I feel happier for the club, for my teammates and the team when I see everyone celebrating.”
