Manchester City close with the signing of Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic for £25 million.

A bid has been made for the Croatia international and all parties are hoping for a decision before the end of the week.

City were allowed to speak to the 29-year-old at the beginning of the month, before he went on international duty, to establish personal terms.

Kovacic’s departure brings an abrupt end to his five-year spell at Stamford Bridge after initially joining Real Madrid on loan.

During his time at the club, Kovacic has added a fourth Champions League trophy to the three he won in Madrid, as well as the Europa League in 2019.

He made 221 appearances for the Blues, scoring six times and providing 15 assists.

City will then try to negotiate a deal with Red Bull Leipzig for £88 million-valued central defender Josko Gvardiol, Kovacic’s international teammate.

Bayern Munich remain interested in City right-back Kyle Walker, but he is also in talks to extend his stay with the Treble winners.

City are looking into the return of coach Juanma Lillo to Pep Guardiola’s back room following the departure of Enzo Maresca, who became Leicester City’s new boss. Lillo, 57, coaches Al Sadd in Qatar.
