Man City have reached a £29.4 million deal with Palmeiras to sign centre-back Vitor Reis.
The Brazilian defender will immediately join Pep Guardiola’s squad instead of remaining in Brazil for the Club World Cup.
Palmeiras president Leila Pereira had confirmed that City had made an official offer last week that fell short of valuation, but talks continued.
The signing of the 19-year-old, who can also play as a right-back, comes as a boost for City as Kyle Walker pushes for a move to Milan.
‘There was an official proposal from Manchester City, but we are negotiating. I won’t talk about the amount, but it has not achieved what Palmeiras wants,” the Palmeiras president said.
‘But I’m in no hurry. Vitor still has a long contract. We are in discussions and if we reach a value that is good for Palmeiras, for the athlete and for Manchester, okay. But nothing has been decided yet.’

Pep Guardiola’s side are also expected to complete the signing of Lens player Abdukodir Khusanov
City are also working this week to finalize a transfer fee for Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush
Reis also had interest from a number of clubs in Europe, including Brighton, whose bid was rejected at the beginning of this month.
City are also working this week to finalize a transfer fee for Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush and will sign Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov.
Khusanov, the 20-year-old Uzbekistan international, missed Sunday’s win at Le Havre as City were finalizing the transfer.
The centre-back, who has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract, must undergo a medical and obtain a work permit before being officially confirmed as Guardiola’s first new signing in a busy January window.
Mail Sport reported last month that the Premier League champions were hoping to bring in three or four new recruits across all levels of a squad struggling with an ongoing injury crisis.
Marmoush had become a target in forward areas and the 25-year-old can operate anywhere in the front three or as a foil for top scorer Erling Haaland.
Frankfurt, nine points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, would need around £67 million to let the Egyptian leave mid-season.
