A man has been charged with murder after the body of an elderly man was found in a car park next to a train station.

NSW Police officers were called to the area after the grim discovery was made at around 7.20am on Sunday at the Station Street car park, next to Wollongong train station, on the NSW south coast.

The dead man is believed to be a 68-year-old local resident but has yet to be formally identified.

A 37-year-old man was arrested on Crown Street in Wollongong at 10.40am yesterday before being taken into police custody.

The man taken to Wollongong police station was later charged with murder.

He has been refused bail and will appear in Wollongong Local Court today.

Earlier, officers, along with detectives from the homicide unit, set up a crime scene in the area and have since established Strike Force Alleppo to investigate the man’s death.

The multi-storey car park was cordoned off by police at the main entrance on Sunday, after dozens of police cars took to the streets as locals looked on in horror.

Train station staff reportedly found the man’s body on the first floor, near the western side of the parking garage. Daily telegram reported.

The area is known to be frequented by people who have trouble sleeping.

Forensic experts searched the scene for evidence as detectives began their investigation into the alleged incident.

Pastor Josh Hammann said locals were shocked by the scene after a convoy of police cars arrived on the streets.

“We understand that something very sad has happened,” he told the newspaper ABC.

“It is primarily a police matter, but our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”
