A man has been arrested and a motorcyclist is on the run after a shot was fired in broad daylight during an alleged jewelry heist in front of shocked onlookers.

Emergency services were called to Diamond Hill Jewelers at Carnes Hill Marketplace in Sydney’s southwest around 4:45 p.m. Monday following reports of an armed robbery.

Police were told two men entered the store and allegedly smashed glass display cabinets before firing a single shot from a handgun and fleeing with stolen jewelry.

Officers were directed to a motorcycle outside the mall and rushed outside to arrest a male passenger in dramatic scenes as the rider reportedly fled the scene.

A desperate manhunt is now underway for the motorcyclist who is still on the run Monday night with additional police units helping to track him down.

The arrested man was in possession of a firearm and jewelry that were seized by the police.

The alleged armed robbery happened just 15 minutes before the jeweler’s closing time

A major police operation continues at the mall, with the jeweler cordoned off as they interview shocked staff and shoppers.

Photos of the scene show the shop floor covered in shattered glass.

“He shot at the jewelry store. And from then on he came in, he ran out, he grabbed a few things off the front plate, but from what I saw, he came out, went to his bike and he just left,” a witness told Nine News .

Others described the chaos in the mall, including Woolworths, where customers were locked in the supermarket 30 minutes after the incident.

“There were some children crying because they didn’t know where their mother was, so a few were separated from their parents.”
