Man against boys: Brad Fittler’s teenage son steamrolls Queensland players to score stunning try

Brad Fittler’s teenage son caught the eye at the Under-16 National Rugby Championship after scoring a stunning try that left defenders floundering in his wake.

Affectionately known as ‘The Tank’ by his teammates, Zach Fittler lived up to his reputation when the New South Wales Waratahs defeated the Queensland Reds 32-3 at the Sunnybank Rugby Club in Brisbane on Saturday.

The teenager got the ball on the right wing, before starting a stampede, pushing a defender sideways to score with astonishing ease.

“What a bike, what a frame,” the commentator commented after Fittler scored in the second half.

“Big Fittler escapes one, says see you later, another, carnage in his wake in his wake as he crosses the road.”

Fittler, who lives at Scots College in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs and lives on the Northern Beaches, has already caught the eye of many observers, both in rugby and the NRL.

“I don’t want to underestimate this, there is an atmosphere of excitement in the group,” said New South Wales Under-16 coach Paul Cividen.

“We are very happy with the way they have performed, but just as excited about the improvement we can get from this.

‘That is exciting. Our patience and our execution is something [to work on], there were some opportunities that we let slip through our fingers. That is normal and expected, but we want to improve.’

“He’s a great athlete and a good player.”

Fittler has already played for the Sydney Roosters Under-17 team this season, following in the footsteps of his amazing father, who played 217 games for the Tricolours.

The former NRL legend noted that his son was already bigger than him despite being just a teenager.

“He’s making his own way, so he’s extremely excited and a little nervous,” the New South Wales coach told Nine News after his son Roosters debuted.

‘He’s bigger and stronger’ [than I am]. It [changing of the guard] happened a few years ago, so I’m used to being dominated at home.’

Fittler, who won 39 caps for the Kangaroos and played in 31 State of Origin appearances for New South Wales, was also adamant he would not interfere in his son’s career.

“I’m very aware that he has his own coaches,” he said.

“There are a lot of times when I want to say something, and probably the hardest part of my day isn’t.”
