Man accused of stalking outside Taylor Swift’s Manhattan home to receive psychiatric treatment
NEW YORK — A man accused of stalking Taylor Swift after being spotted multiple times outside the singer’s Manhattan mansion was found unfit to stand trial and will be committed to state custody for psychiatric treatment, attorneys said Friday.
David Crowe, 33, was arrested three times outside the pop star’s home in Manhattan’s exclusive Tribeca neighborhood late last month. The Seattle resident was charged with stalking, harassment and contempt.
Prosecutors have said Crowe violated a protective order issued Jan. 24 and was required to stay away from Swift and her home the same day it was issued.
Crowe was found unfit to stand trial after a psychiatric examination, and the case was dismissed. He will be placed in the care of the Office of Mental Health to receive treatment, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office.
“We are pleased that all parties now agree on the obvious truth that Mr. Crowe is too ill to continue, and that he needs treatment, not jail time,” said New York County District Attorney Katherine LeGeros Bajuk Defender Services in a prepared statement. “We look forward to ensuring that Mr. Crowe receives the psychiatric treatment and supportive social services he needs to achieve a successful and stable return to society.”
According to court documents, Crowe was seen near the singer’s home approximately 30 times since November 25.
Swift’s Manhattan mansion has been the scene of several burglaries when Swift was not there, including by some identified as stalkers.
A representative for the singer did not return an email from The Associated Press seeking comment.
