Man, 71, is crushed to death by car wash

  • He became trapped between a car and the car wash machines
  • It is currently unclear whether he had attempted to abandon a vehicle during a wash

A 71-year-old man was apparently crushed to death when he got stuck in an automatic car wash in Spain.

The victim, not named in local media, was trapped between a car and the moving steel framework of the car wash in Gandia, near Valencia, on December 10 at around 5.30pm.

The car wash would have been located between CV-670 and Grau Avenue.

It is currently unclear whether he had attempted to leave a vehicle in the middle of a wash or if he had accidentally walked in while the vehicle was operating.

Firefighters were only able to free him by removing the car after finding him unconscious and without a pulse.

They attempted to revive him with a defibrillator and CPR, but paramedics later pronounced him dead at the scene.

Photos show the automated car wash after it was cordoned off by police following the bizarre accident.

Authorities told local media that the victim had suffered severe head and chest trauma before his death. It is not known whether he had family and whether they were informed of his death.

It comes after MailOnline revealed earlier this year that a grandfather who died after being trapped in a car wash in Melbourne, Australia, was a much-loved father-of-two and grandfather and an active member of the Greek community when his life was tragically cut short.

Athanasios Papageorgiou was left fighting for his life after becoming stuck in the car wash of a Puma-branded petrol station in Springvale, south-east of Melbourne, in November 2019. He died three days later.

He had told his wife Maria he was just going to get fuel when a quick decision to wash his car ended in tragedy.

“He went to fill up the car with gas, something happened to the machine and he died of suffocation,” she told friends and family via social media at the time.

A few days earlier, Mr Papageorgiou could be seen enjoying a traditional Greek event at the Springvale Greek Community and Tavern District, where he was a regular.
