A 62-year-old man buried alive for four days was rescued after police heard his muffled cries for help coming from underground.

Officers in Moldova found the man during their investigation after a 74-year-old woman was found dead in her own home by a relative on Monday.

Police arrested a suspect in her death and while searching his house in the same village, they heard cries for help from nearby.

They started digging and found the entrance to a makeshift grave where an 18-year-old man had trapped the older man.

Police images released on Wednesday show the man being pulled away. He was conscious and had a neck wound.

Forensic specialists were called to a home in Ustia, northwestern Moldova, on Monday after an elderly woman was found dead in her home.

Specialists from the Center for Technical, Criminal and Forensic Investigations determined that the woman died after being physically attacked and seriously injured.

Officers quickly identified an 18-year-old relative of the deceased as a suspect in the murder. Neither the victim nor the teenager were named in local media.

The suspect was reportedly found intoxicated in his own home. He is said to have made a ‘confusing’ and ‘inconsistent’ statement during the police interrogation.

As officers searched his home for evidence, they heard disturbing noises and cries for help coming from the ground near the house.

Heading towards the noise, they started digging and discovered a man in his sixties buried in a makeshift grave covered with dirt.

He had suffered a neck wound, but was alive and conscious.

The man told police that he and the teen had been drinking alcohol together on Saturday when they started arguing.

The suspect then allegedly attacked him with a knife before locking him in the makeshift cellar, burying him alive and covering the entrance with dirt.

Officers believe the teenager killed the elderly woman the following day, either on Sunday evening or in the early hours of Monday.

He has been taken into custody while police and prosecutors continue to investigate him for murder and attempted murder. He faces life in prison if found guilty.

The rescued man is being treated in hospital.

One resident said of the deceased victim: “She was a very decent woman, no one ever had any problems with her.”
