A 25-year-old man was caught having sex with a cow after triggering an alarm set up by farmers who suspected their cattle were being abused.

Liam Brown snuck into a farmhouse in Burton, near Christchurch, Dorset, in the dead of night to commit the vicious act.

But he was discovered by the farm’s new surveillance system and caught on the spot by farmers who rushed to the scene to arrest him.

A DNA sample from a calf showed that ‘intercourse’ had taken place on June 12, 2022.

Brown sobbed as he pleaded guilty at Poole Magistrates Court to sexual penetration with a live animal and causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.

The case has been transferred to Bournemouth Crown Court for sentencing as magistrates said Brown could now face a prison sentence.

Charles Nightingale said the farm installed alarm and surveillance systems after he became concerned about the welfare of their young stock.

He said Brown had been known to the farmers since childhood, as members of his relatives had previously worked on the farm.

Mr Nightingale said: ‘The suspect had been known to the family for a number of years since he was a child as members of his family used to work on the farm.

‘The defendant was found by members of the farming family who were concerned about the welfare of the young stock in question and raised the alarm in the area.

‘They were alerted that night by alarms and equipment they had set up, with the result that the suspect was found.

“Samples were then taken from the animal that confirmed the sexual intercourse in question.”

Mr Nightingale added: ‘The family who own the farm don’t want him to go near it.’

Harry Price-Smith defended that the case should be taken to a Crown Court for sentencing, and the accused was granted unconditional bail.

Brown, of Grosvenor Gardens, Bournemouth, was addressed by the magistrates who said: ‘It is going to court because the offenses are so serious that you may need a harsher sentence than we can give.’

The verdict will take place on September 22.
