The man was taken to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, the spokesperson said. Coronado was arrested and charged on Sunday.

The Randall's Island shelter opened in August 2023, replacing a smaller center built on the island a year earlier.

The upgraded shelter can accommodate up to 3,000 adults and includes bathrooms, a cafeteria and access to emergency responders.

Upon arrival, migrants will receive a health screening for COVID and active tuberculosis, as well as a skin exam for varicella and varicella.

The opening of the shelter came following a report from city officials that more than 100,000 migrants had passed through the five boroughs since 2022.

As of December 2023, more than 140,000 migrants had flooded into the city over an 18-month period, pushing the city to its limits.

The shelter on Randall's Island alone costs taxpayers about $20 million a month.

Mayor Eric Adams has called on the White House to provide federal support to manage the national asylum seeker crisis.

Last month, Adams issued Executive Order 538, requiring better coordination of charter bus companies transporting migrant arrivals into the city.

The measure was intended to “ensure the safety and well-being of both migrants and the city staff receiving them,” according to a press release.

On Wednesday, the city filed a lawsuit against 17 charter bus companies from Texas, Louisiana, Ohio and Indiana, seeking $708 million in damages.

The lawsuit demands money to cover the care of more than 30,000 asylum seekers who have arrived since 2022.

Despite the bill, which requires charter buses to provide advance written notice of their arrival, “not a single Texas bus” had complied, said Adams' lead attorney Lisa Zornberg.

Penalties for violating the law include confiscation, fines and possible imprisonment.
