A 22-year-old man has been left in tears after being scolded by his girlfriend for repeatedly burping at the dinner table as he met her parents for the first time.
US-based Reddit user LikelySalary409 set out to find the popular Am I A**hole’s sub-thread to ask users desperately: ‘AITA for laughing when my son came home after meeting his girlfriend’s parents because he chose to behave the way he does at home?’
The unnamed man had previously told his son several times that his continued belching at the dinner table is “rude” and “disgusting” – but added that his wife, on the other hand, “immediately steps in to defend him” and excuses his behavior.
He claims the son can ‘control himself’, but ‘he just chooses not to’ – and it has now backfired.

The Reddit user took to the discussion forum to detail the details of the family feud.
He wrote: ‘My son burps a lot while eating. I have tried several times to tell him that this is rude. I told him to slow down so he doesn’t swallow air with his food. I told him it’s disgusting.
“My wife will immediately intervene to defend him. She’ll say that’s how he is and it’s not his fault.
“The point is, he can control himself when I remind him. He just chooses not to.”
The annoyed dad continued: “He had a date with his girlfriend last night and she ripped him a new hole. It was the first time he met her parents since they moved to another city.
‘They went to a fancy restaurant and he belched all night. He almost came home in tears because she made fun of him for acting like an asshole in front of her family.
“I heard him tell my wife about it and I laughed. She asked what was so funny and I reminded them both that I had tried to teach him table manners dozens, if not hundreds, of times, but he rejected them and she protected him. I said he’s a grown man now and he had to learn it the hard way.”
He concluded, “They both think she overreacted and that I’m the asshole for being amused by his experience.”
