Makeup artist reveals exactly WHICH kind of brush you should use to apply every different type of cosmetic… so, have YOU been doing it correctly?

A make-up artist has revealed exactly what kind of brushes to use when applying certain products, explaining how they can make or break your whole look.

The breakdown was divided by Selena Marchanda professional makeup artist based in Nova Scotia, Canada, who shares much of her makeup wisdom with viewers on social media and amassed nearly 500,000 followers on her TikTok account.

In a recent clipwhich Marchand created as part of her “It's Probably Not Your Makeup Products, It's You” series, she explained that there are mistakes some people can make when it comes to using the right brush.

Luckily, there's a simple solution, and it starts with throwing away your dirty, old makeup brushes.

Makeup artist Selena Marchand, based in Canada, revealed why using certain makeup brushes was important when applying certain products

“I want you to look at your makeup bag, and if your brushes look like this, if your brushes look crusty and stale and dusty, there's no way you're going to get a good makeup application,” she explained in the video.

As she said this, she showed a photo of dirty, heavily used brushes across the screen so people could compare their own tools.

The expert explained that there was no reason why anyone would use dirty brushes when applying makeup.

“There's no excuse because there are tons of makeup brushes that are affordable and that work really, really well,” she continued.

The makeup artist explained that she recommended two Morphe brand makeup brush sets, which retail for about $30 each.

One set contains brushes made for the eyes, and the other contains brushes tailored for facial makeup.

She also recommended brushes from the Sephora collection because they are “very affordable.”

The content creator then explained why using large brushes isn't always the solution when it comes to applying certain products.

She also explained why using big, huge brushes wasn't always better when applying makeup to the face

Keep it clean: Selena's wise makeup brush advice

  • Make sure you don't use old, crusty and dirty brushes
  • Bronzer and blush should be applied with smaller brushes that occupy the area you want to apply the product to
  • Flat and stiff makeup brushes are not intended for foundation

“When you have these big brushes that take over your whole face when you're applying products, they just don't work,” Marchand said, showing as an example the type of brush she was referring to.

“They're way too big,” she continued, showing how this makeup brush covered her entire cheeks when she tried to apply makeup with it.

“When you apply blush and bronzer, you want to stick with something that fits snugly on your cheek and doesn't cover too much surface area,” she explained.

Marchand then compared the two brushes by size, showing a much smaller brush next to the large one she had previously warned about.

“This one literally takes up my entire face,” Marchand said as she applied the larger brush to her cheek.

“And this one takes up the exact area where I want to apply my product,” she said of the other, smaller brush in her hand.

Last but not least, Marchand explained why flat and stiff makeup brushes weren't actually meant for applying foundation.

“This is not a foundation brush, you will never be able to apply good makeup if you use it to apply foundation,” Marchand explained, holding up a flat brush as an example.

Instead, you want to use a brush with short bristles and an angular shape, the makeup artist said.

“These are foundation brushes,” she said. “The bristles are short and slightly slanted.”

The makeup artist held up the two brushes to compare sizes and explained that the larger one was not as effective, especially when applying blush and bronzer

She said stiff, flat-topped makeup brushes should not be used to apply foundation

In the comments section of her video, many users praised her for the wisdom of the makeup brushes

If you're looking for a good foundation brush, Marchand recommends one from star Selena Gomez's Rare Beauty brand, or the 101 from BK Beauty brand.

In the comments section of her video, many users praised Marchand for her important insights.

'I love this series!' wrote one person. 'I always thought big brushes are better. Thank you for your great advice!!!'

Another agreed: 'Oh my goodness this is so helpful and I always look forward to your videos.'

'And wash your brushes! I'm enjoying this series, keep it up!' someone else typed.

“Tell that to my mother, who still has brushes from the early 1990s,” one commenter joked.
