Make-up free Selena Gomez urges voters to ‘stay in line’ in candid video on Election Day

Selena Gomez urged her fans to “stay in line” as she shared a candid video on Election Day.

The 32-year-old actress posted a makeup-free clip to her Instagram and her X account on Tuesday in which she encouraged voters to stay put despite long waits.

“I hear there are very, very long lines today, and I wanted to make this video really quickly to say please stay in line,” said Gomez — who opted to vote early by mail-in ballot.

“Long lines are very frustrating and annoying and I know they’re not fun, but we need your voice and we need to vote for your future.”

She added, “And if you’re in line before the polls close, stay in line. Even after closing time, the polling stations remain open until everyone in that row has voted.’

She concluded her statement, telling her social media followers: “If you stand in line before the polls close, you have a legal right to vote. So please vote.”

It looked like Selena had taken the video on a whim, bareheaded, her dark locks pulled back and wearing a white tank top.

Some of her fans thanked her for encouraging them to vote without pushing any of the candidates.

“In any case, she did not refer any followers to a specific candidate. Respect,” one person wrote.

“Thanks for being one of the few celebrities who encourages voting without pushing a specific political candidate,” another added.

“I like the overall video, even though you’re a demo, respect.”

A few days earlier, Gomez took to social media to encourage her loyal American fan base to vote, but the actress only caused questions and confusion among her foreign fans.

Days ahead of the polarizing US presidential election, the Rare Beauty founder turned to TikTok to share a clip of her changing her ballot at a nearby ballot box.

While heading to the highly anticipated premiere of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, The Only Murders in the Building actress can be seen jumping out of a car in a sparkling red dress and heels and running to a mailbox along a sidewalk.

Still, the 26-second clip – which has since been viewed 380,000 times – has left some of her fans outside the US confused by the voting system.

One user went to “X,” formerly Twitter sharing: “Wait. Is this how Americans vote? By dropping their ballot in some box on the street?’

Another commented: ‘How long have you been voting like this??? Have you not questioned this method until now? Moreover, there is no supervision? Who the hell thought this was a good idea?’

“I think this is wild because in Australia you have to come to a polling place set up in a primary school, get your name written down in a book and then they give you a ballot paper that you fill in in a box,” another responded.

The “drop boxes” are being placed in cities across the country to “provide voters with a safe and convenient way to return their ballot,” the U.S. Election Assistance Commission explains.

“A drop box is a secure, locked structure operated by election officials where voters can drop off their ballots from the time they receive them in the mail until the polls close on Election Day.”

The polls may be manned or unattended, and some may be permanent while others may be temporary.

After the event at Madison Square Garden on October 27, Gomez, who has family of Mexican descent, said she “strongly disagreed with the comments that were made” after Hinchcliffe compared Puerto Rico to a “floating island of trash” .

“I definitely want to stand behind my people,” she added.
