Argentine soccer star Gonzalo Montiel appeared before prosecutors Tuesday morning for a psychiatric evaluation into January 2020 rape allegations filed by his ex-girlfriend.
The 27-year-old world champion was accompanied by his lawyer and did not respond to questions from several reporters waiting outside the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the Buenos Aires town of La Matanza.
The woman, who introduces herself as Carolina, was in a relationship with Montiel and was invited to his birthday party at his parents’ house in the La Matanza neighborhood of Virrey del Pino on December 31, 2019.
Carolina, who also works as a flight attendant, alleges she was raped by him and at least three other men on January 1, 2020.
So far, only Montiel and his neighbor and friend Alexis Acosta have been charged with sexual abuse involving sexual promiscuity.
Argentine football star Gonzalo Montiel has been accused by his ex-girlfriend, a model and flight attendant who identified herself as Carolina, of raping her at his parents’ home in La Matanza, Argentina, on January 1, 2020
In an interview with Argentine news network TN in April, Carolina said she had nightmares in which she was raped by soccer star Gonzalo Montiel after attending his birthday party on the evening of December 31, 2019. She said the incident occurred on January 1, 2020, and that three of his friends were also involved.
Carolina’s lawyer, Raquel Hermida, appeared in an interview with news channel América 24 outside the prosecutor’s office and said Montiel’s psychiatric evaluation was the last step before the case goes to trial.
“It seems to me without any doubt the best procedure to determine and convict those responsible,” Hermida said.
Hermida said Carolina was “in love in some way” and that she met Montiel’s family the night she was allegedly sexually assaulted.
“Unfortunately, upon arrival there was surrender and sexual abuse and she immediately fell asleep because they gave her drugs and alcohol,” said Hermida.
“The drugs are proven in the case, it’s proven with witnesses and with the other defendant (Acosta),” she added. “In other words, the witnesses are not just talking about drugs, they’re talking about pharmaceutical drugs, but another defendant is also talking about cocaine.”
After the two-hour meeting, Montiel’s legal team released a statement saying they were confident he would be acquitted.
“This new procedure will provide evidence that, as shown in the case, will confirm his innocence,” the judge said.
“Compelling evidence has been presented to the trial demonstrating Montiel’s non-involvement in the acts with which he is accused. The court is confident that the ongoing legal process will produce the results expected by the defense.”
Montiel will appear for a second evaluation on Friday.
In an interview with TN News on April 11, Carolina said she arrived at Montiel’s parents’ home in a taxi and greeted his family in the small patio.
After a while she went inside and was given a glass of Fernet with Coca-Cola. After that she started to feel unwell while dancing.
Carolina remembers asking Montiel for help via WhatsApp.
“I wrote, ‘Gonzalo, I don’t feel well.’ I wrote, ‘I’m scared, can you take me home?’ He didn’t respond to any of these things,” she said.
Argentine footballer Gonzalo Montiel is seen with his lawyer as he arrives at the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the Buenos Aires city of La Matanza on Tuesday morning for a psychiatric evaluation after the athlete and a friend were formally accused of raping his former girlfriend.
In April, Carolina came forward and shared details of how she was drugged and raped by her former boyfriend, Argentine soccer star Gonzalo Montiel
She said she then charged her cell phone and went to the bathroom, where she washed her face and saw Montiel as she walked out.
“That was one of the last things I saw. From there I completely lost consciousness and woke up on the street, on the sidewalk,” Carolina said.
‘I saw dirt and I was all wet. And I heard screaming, I started hearing screaming. His sister insulted me, she wanted to hit me. I didn’t understand anything. I didn’t understand why her sister wanted to hit me. I completely lost consciousness because I don’t know how I got home.’
Carolina recalled waking up later that day at 8 p.m. and noticing bruises on her legs. She said Montiel texted her later and told her she had slept with someone.
“I replied, ‘Impossible.’ He didn’t pick up and Gonzalo’s mother called me. Gonzalo had obviously given her my number, because she didn’t have my phone number,” she said.
“She told me, ‘My love, they raped you. Put some (vaginal) suppositories in there.’ I started crying, screaming. I didn’t understand anything,” Carolina said. “I said to her, ‘What do you mean I was raped? What do you mean you have to put some suppositories in there?'”
Carolina admitted that she had nightmares about the incident and that at one point she remembered Montiel lying on top of her in a dank-smelling room while the other two men laughed.
In a video statement posted on Hermida’s Instagram on April 10, Carolina claimed that she had sought out a lawyer interested in reaching an economic deal rather than filing legal charges against Montiel and the other suspects.
Montiel, who returned to Sevilla in La Liga after a year on loan at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, denied all allegations.
In June 2023, he voluntarily testified before a judge before being informed that he was under formal investigation.
Montiel, who scored the decisive penalty shootout in the 2022 World Cup match against France, played for iconic Argentine club River Plate at the time of the alleged rape.
