Major update after Aussie father was left fighting for life following moped accident in Bali

An Australian father who was left fighting for his life after falling from a moped while on holiday in Bali has been cleared to fly home for emergency treatment.

Kevin Malligan, 24, went to the Indonesian island just weeks before his second child was due to be born in February, but the holiday turned tragic on December 29.

The Sydney man was riding on the back of a moped driven by a friend when the vehicle hit a bump and he fell, hitting his head on the road.

His wife Leah, who rushed to the holiday island fearing she would have to say goodbye to her husband, finally received reassuring news from doctors.

“Last night his CT scan showed his brain is fit enough to book the medical flight home,” she told Daily Mail Australia on Monday morning.

“It's just a matter of time to get the money to make that flight happen. We're almost there, so we don't lose hope.

“We have made the decision to keep him in a coma and on a ventilator until we can get him the flight back to Australia,” Ms Malligan said.

The news came on New Year's Eve and marked a sad turn for Mr Malligan, who had visited the island specifically to ring in the new year.

When he fell off the bike, Mr. Malligan suffered a brain hemorrhage and broke his neck, and was taken to Nussa Dua Hospital in critical condition.

Despite being 32 weeks pregnant, his wife flew to Bali to say goodbye to him in case the worst happened.

Mrs Malligan said her husband was not doing anything stupid or drinking when the accident happened.

“He and his friend just hit a bump in the road, four minutes away from where they were supposed to be.”

She had tried to get him travel insurance that covered scooters, but nothing was available.

The family's medical costs add up to $90,000, even before a flight back to Australia.

Her parents, Jodie and Belinda French, have a GoFundMe page to raise money for their daughter and son-in-law.

By early Monday morning, it had raised nearly $80,000 of its $100,000 goal.

Ms. Malligan flew to Bali with Mr. Malligan's father and brother to be by his side, her parents wrote.

“This is a very difficult and emotional time for all of us,” they said.

Early on New Year's Eve, before she got the positive update, Mrs Malligan posted a photo of her next to her husband's bed and said she 'to thank everyone so much for all your donations, support and beautiful messages.

“We can't thank our friends, family and community enough. We will be forever grateful.

'Kev is stable after his operation and that is more than I could ever have wished for. Please keep him in your prayers. You got this Kev.”

Her parents wrote, “There will be some substantial medical and other bills following such an operation.

'We do not want to burden Leah and his family with this at such a difficult time.

'Leah and Kevin have a two-year-old daughter, Ivy, and are expecting their second child in early February 2024.

“We can only hope and pray for them in this time of great difficulty.”
