Nearly 2,000 models of a popular family car have been recalled after a major defect was discovered in the vehicle’s airbag system.
The Federal Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development issued an urgent recall for 1870 Volkswagen Caddies on Friday.
The models range between 2021 and 2023.

The recall notice states that an airbag deactivation switch may have been incorrectly installed on affected models, instead of a blanking plug.
“This could cause the driver to assume that the front passenger airbag is disabled when it is always operational,” the recall notice said.
It is stated that a dangerous situation could arise if a child were to sit in the front seat due to the deactivated airbag, when in reality it is active.
Owners of affected Caddies are advised to take the vehicle to the nearest Volkswagen dealer to have it inspected and repaired free of charge.
More than 2,000 Volkswagen Amaroks were recalled last year due to defective driveshaft bolts – which the department said could increase the risk of accident, injury or death.
