Major breakthrough after newborn was found abandoned in dumpster outside a Texas taco shop

Houston police have announced a major breakthrough in the investigation into a newborn boy who ended up in a dumpster outside a taco restaurant.

Authorities have been investigating the incident since rescuers found the baby with its umbilical cord still attached on Sunday.

As part of that investigation, officers reviewed surveillance footage from the crime scene to determine who threw the newborn into a trash-filled dumpster and to locate possible witnesses.

They have now identified a suspect and are “still working on the investigation,” said spokesperson Jodi Silva told ABC News.

No details about the suspect, including his or her alleged involvement in the crime, have been released. Silva said the suspect’s name will not be released until charges are filed.

Less than a day after the shocking discovery, a two-month-old baby was abandoned by Pasadena police officers in the Houston area.

A man had previously called police and said he was having a mental health crisis and was looking for a place to leave the baby.

Child protection services have been called for assistance.

Houston Fire Department spokesman Martee Boose said, “These are tragic stories, and those stories didn’t have to happen at all.

‘If a citizen has a newborn baby who is 60 days old or younger, he or she can drop it off at a fire station or hospital. Those individuals do not have to ask for information about themselves.

“The only information they may ask for is perhaps the baby’s medical history. That way they can make sure the baby gets the best medical care.”
