Girrawheen bashing: Elderly woman allegedly battered unconscious in home invasion in Perth- as released immigration detainee is one of four arrested

One of three men accused of beating an elderly woman unconscious in her own home appears to be a detainee released from immigration detention.

Majid Jamshidi Doukoshkan, 43, was one of 149 people released from immigration detention after the Supreme Court ruled against indefinite detention late last year.

Jamshidi Doukoshkan was ordered to appear in court in Perth in February after breaching some of his bail conditions.

He was taken out of custody again on Monday after allegedly breaking into the home of Ninette, 73, and Philip Simons, 76, in Girrawheen in Perth’s north on April 16.

The Federal Opposition has called for the immediate resignation of Home Secretary Clare O’Neil and Immigration Minister Andrew Giles.

“If they can’t explain what they’re going to do to make sure this never happens again, they should both resign,” said Liberal Senator James Paterson.

Mr and Mrs Simons were both at their home on Allinson Drive when three men posing as police officers knocked on their door.

As soon as Mr Simons opened the door, he was reportedly pushed to the ground and his hands were tied behind his back.

Ms Simons was reportedly attacked shortly afterwards, with the group holding her to the ground and punching her several times in the face, rendering her unconscious.

It is further alleged that the thieves stole more than $200,000 worth of jewelry and other belongings before fleeing the home on foot.

Ms Simons said the attack left her traumatized and seriously injured.

‘I’m not the same person I used to be, I can barely stand or walk. I used to be able to dance and it is very unlikely that I will do so again,” she said.

“The dizziness is driving me crazy.”

Last weekend, police arrested four people, including Majid Jamshidi Doukoshkan, 43, one of the immigration detainees released from detention.

He appeared in the Joondalup Magistrates Court on Monday charged with aggravated house burglary, assault, detaining a person, robbery and impersonating a public servant.

He was taken into custody and brought back to court on June 10.

Mr Doukoshkan was among the inmates released from Perth’s Yongah Hill Detention Center last November.

According to a Supreme Court ruling, it was illegal for detainees who could not be deported to be held indefinitely and he was released into the community along with dozens of other detainees.

On March 22, a court order requiring Mr. Doukoshkan to remain at a permanent address was halted after about a month in effect.

Detectives and Tactical Response Group officers executed several search warrants in Nollamara.

During the search of a home on Newhaven Way, police reportedly found handcuffs, a wallet with a WA Police badge and a WA Police brimmed hat.

Some jewelry was also reportedly recovered.

A 38-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were arrested in the home.

The 38-year-old man was charged with a number of offenses related to the alleged aggravated home burglary.

At around 4.40pm on Sunday, another search warrant was served at Bangalla Place in Balcatta, where a 48-year-old woman was arrested upon entry.

Police will allege the woman drove three men to and from Girrawheen’s home on the night of the incident.

A short time later, at around 5.30pm, a 43-year-old man was arrested during the execution of a search warrant on Cape St in Osborne Park. Jewelry was allegedly found in the house and he was subsequently charged.

As a result of an extensive investigation, several other people were also charged with related crimes.

WA Liberal Leader Libby Mettam said Prime Minister Roger Cook had failed to deliver on his promise that detainees in the WA community would be closely monitored by police.

An Australian Border Force spokesperson said the Department of Home Affairs was aware that a person holding a Bridging Visa R was arrested by WA Police on April 28.

“The safety and security of the community remains the absolute priority for the Australian Border Force and the Department of Home Affairs, and we will continue to work closely with our state and territory partners,” the spokesperson said.

The investigation is ongoing and one alleged perpetrator remains outstanding.
