Magnitude 6.5 earthquake strikes close Australian neighbour

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 has struck off the coast of Tonga.

The earthquake was recorded near the Vava’u group of islands at 20:05 UTC on Tuesday.

Geoscience Australia reported that the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, there is no tsunami threat to Australia.
