Magnitude 3.9 earthquake hits near Goulburn, NSW

A magnitude 3.9 earthquake has struck near Goulburn in southern NSW.

The earthquake occurred around 6:40 am on Thursday at a depth of 1 kilometer.

According to Geoscience Australia, as many as 270 people reported feeling the earthquake, but it is not expected to have caused significant damage.

Residents in Crookwell and as far away as Bowral and Mittagong in the Southern Highlands, as well as Canberra, reported feeling the earthquake.

Seismology Research Center lead scientist Adam Pascale told Sunrise that people close to the center of the earthquake may have heard a loud bang.

“It’s certainly strong enough to be felt, but unlikely to cause any damage to the area,” he said.

Many residents around southern NSW reported on social media that they felt the earthquake.

‘Felt in Cowra. House was definitely moving underneath us, it felt like we were rolling off a wave,” one person said.

“I thought someone was knocking on the windows,” said a man from Harden, southwest of Sydney.

“I felt the house shake as if something had hit it,” said another.
