A magnitude 3.7 earthquake has rocked a small town in southwestern Victoria following Sunday’s magnitude 5.0 quake.

Warning for Apollo Bay and the surrounding area, Vic Emergency said the earthquake occurred at 1.17pm on Monday.

The aid agency said the incident resulted in “little to no damage” but advised residents that aftershocks could occur.

If that happens, locals are advised to drop to the ground, take cover under a study table (or similar piece of furniture), wait for the shaking to stop and stay alert for emergency broadcasts.

On Sunday, the tourist towns of Colac were hit by the effects of a magnitude 5.0 earthquake at 2.11am, before a secondary aftershock of magnitude 3.6 was felt in Apollo Bay at 5.44am.

According to Geoscience Australia, the effects of the quake were felt by more than 8,300 people, with Melbourne residents noticing minor damage.

The Victorian State Emergency Service (SES) said “a few calls” had been made for emergency assistance, but “only minor damage was reported and no injuries were reported.”

Reports came from as far north as towns along the NSW-Victoria border and as far south as King Island in Tasmania.

The earthquake was also felt across Melbourne, in the suburbs of Reservoir, Sunshine and St Kilda.

Monday afternoon’s quake is the third to rock the state this month, after residents of Lakes Entrance, a coastal town in the state’s east, were struck by a magnitude 3.0 earthquake .

Vic Emergency will release the next update on Monday at 8.10pm. Residents in affected areas are advised to contact the SES on 132 500 if necessary.
