An earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale has rocked the Western Australian town of Kalgoorlie, with residents reporting waking up to their homes shaking.
Hundreds of residents felt the quake, which struck at 5:31 a.m. Tuesday morning, in the southern part of the mining town at a depth of 7 km.
People initially thought the quake was related to nearby mineral operations, but the government confirmed the quake later in the morning.
‘When you live in Kalgoorlie you always think, oh that’s another mine explosion. But woke up at 5:31 to the house shaking. Just a 2.9 Mag earthquake. Good morning,” resident Robert Koenig Luck wrote on Twitter.
