Belgian tourist dies on one of Australia’s most popular holiday islands after crashing her scooter into a street sign

A 26-year-old Belgian tourist has died after his scooter collided with a street sign on Magnetic Island in Queensland.

The woman was exploring the picturesque island near Townsville on a scooter when she collided with the street sign at about 3 p.m. Friday.

The public initially administered first aid before transferring the woman to Townsville University Hospital.

The woman underwent emergency surgery, but died of her injuries around 9 p.m.

Authorities are working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to notify her family in Belgium.

Magnetic Island, a short ferry ride from Townsville, draws visitors from around the world to see white sand beaches and Australia’s largest colony of koalas.
