Actress and comedian Magda Szubanski looked visibly saddened as she talked about her struggles with emotional eating on the ABC’s Major National Health Check.

The Kath & Kim star, 61, suffers from a litany of chronic health issues and has struggled with her weight for years.

She talked about the psychological demons behind her weight gain while seeing Dr. Weight management expert Lucy Burns interviewed.

“I really think that feeling of being able to forgive myself,” she said tearfully.

“Because I know people say, ‘Why did she do that to herself?’ And I felt I had no choice. It was the only sensible decision I could make given the alternatives I encountered.’

“And then you become such a goddamn shame magnet,” she added.

“And it’s like you’re not supposed to fight back. You can’t defend yourself. You’re supposed to hang your head again in shame and say, “I brought this on myself.”

Magda made some candid admissions and explained her reasoning behind her struggles during a conversation with Dr. Lucy Burns, a weight management expert.

Dr. Burns agreed with Magda, before sharing some enlightening knowledge about the human body’s ability to recover from binge eating and emotional eating.

“The most amazing thing is that our bodies are so forgiving,” she said.

“It can rejuvenate. It can fix this whole process, it can reverse this whole process. As long as you do it early enough and do it with real food.’

Dr. Burns also talked about a common misconception when it comes to losing weight.

“The most amazing thing is that our bodies are so forgiving,” Dr. Burns told Magda

“Some people still believe that you just need to ‘eat less and move more’. And that’s just ignorance,’ said the doctor.

“If it were that simple, we’d all be doing it. It’s not that simple. All we can do is say, “You know what? I’m in charge of me. I’m in charge of me, and I’m going to do what I can to optimize and maximize this wonderful life.”

Magda is one of Australia’s best-known comedians and is best known for playing the lovable loser Sharon Strzelecki on the ABC sitcom Kath & Kim.

Last month, she talked about her poor health condition and revealed that she has battled with various diseases all her life.

She listed her various health issues in an interview with TV Week magazine and said she wondered if others had similar issues.

“There have been times in my life when I was absolutely ravaged by illness,” she said.

“Osteoarthritis, migraines, anxiety – I also suffer from sleep apnea.”

Magda, a longtime activist who campaigned to change same-sex marriage laws in 2017, was previously the face of slimming company Jenny Craig.

She parted ways with Jenny Craig for the second time in 2014 and later regained the 40 kg she had lost in the years that followed.
