Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner could walk free from prison as there is ‘no prospect of an indictment in the Maddie case’, German prosecutor says
Madeleine McCann believes Christian Brueckner is likely to be released from prison because there is ‘no prospect of an indictment in the Maddie case’, a German prosecutor has revealed.
Convicted pedophile and rapist Brueckner, 47, is expected to be released from an unrelated prison sentence while police in three countries search for more concrete evidence against him in the McCann case.
But their efforts may not bear fruit, prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters told Sky News.
He said: ‘There is currently no prospect of charges in the Maddie case.
“As things stand, the imprisonment of accused Christian B will end in early September.”
Madeleine was just three when she went missing from the Portuguese villa where she and her family were staying in May 2007.
Brueckner was identified in June 2020 as the prime suspect in the ‘kidnapping and murder’ of Madeleine McCann.
Brueckner has denied any involvement in her disappearance, but German officials insist he is the man, although no charges have ever been filed.

Philipp Marquort, one of Brueckner’s lawyers, welcomed the prosecutor’s statement.
He told the broadcaster: ‘This confirms the suspicions we have repeatedly expressed, namely that there is no reliable evidence against our client.
‘We regret that we have not yet been given access to the investigation files. We have not yet succeeded in effectively countering the public prejudices arising from statements made by the Public Prosecution Service.’
The convicted rapist is currently nearing the end of his prison sentence for raping an elderly American woman in Praia da Luz, the Portuguese resort where Madeleine disappeared.
In October, he was acquitted of three rapes and two counts of child sexual abuse after a non-jury trial in Germany.
In his closing speech at the courthouse in Braunschweig, Brueckner’s chief lawyer Friedrich Fuelscher hinted at the time that convicted rapist and pedophile Brueckner was only on trial because of his connection with Madeleine’s internationally recognized case.
In handing down the verdict, Judge Engemann made a lengthy statement explaining why Brueckner was acquitted and castigated German prosecutors for naming him in connection with the Madeline McCann saga.

‘We as judges have sworn an oath, and it is only intended to serve the truth. We take this very seriously, but we cannot wrap people in cotton wool.
‘This oath means that we do not have to take into account the views of the media, the defense and the Public Prosecution Service, or the table of regulars in a pub.’
She continued, “Everyone had heard of (Brueckner) in the Maddie McCann case and they all knew that since 2020, Brueckner was always mentioned by the prosecution.
‘If someone is portrayed here in the media as a sex monster and pervert, it influences the witness. “If massive third party suggestions are made in this way, the courtroom testimony is virtually worthless to the legal chamber.”
