M5 East closed citybound due to car fire near Bexley Road

The M5 East in Sydney has been closed heading into the city after a car caught fire, causing traffic chaos during rush hour.

Emergency services were called to the M5 at Bexley Road at around 7.20am on Monday after reports of a car on fire in the tunnel.

Firefighters tried to extinguish the fire, while the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames.

Motorists are advised to take the Bexley Road exit and follow the D5 diversion route.

Motorists can also take the King Georges Road exit and follow the D5 diversion route via Stoney Creek Road, Bexley Road and Forest Road.

The incident has caused heavy traffic and motorists are advised to allow extra travel time.
