M3GAN Producers James Wan And Jason Blum Defend The Film’s PG-13 Rating: ‘I Don’t Make Stomach Ache Too Much’
The producers of the M3GAN film said they believe the film’s PG-13 rating is justified.
In M3GAN, Allison Williams plays robotics engineer Gemma, who gains custody of her niece Katie, played by Violet McGraw.
Gemma tries to lighten Katie’s spirits by presenting her with an AI prototype called the ‘Model 3 Generative’ or M3GAN.
Justified? The producers of the M3GAN film said they believe the film’s PG-13 rating is justified.
The doll is meant to “protect Katie from both physical and emotional harm,” but things take a dark turn.
While there are some bloody scenes in the film, producers James Wan and Jason Blum defended the MPAA’s decision during an interview with the hollywood reporter.
“Some of the scariest movies of all time are PG-13, so I don’t make a big deal about stomach aches,” Jason said. Go see the movie and then tell me about it.

The Grudge, The Ring, Insidious, Drag Me to Hell, and a host of other scary movies have been slapped with PG-13 ratings in recent years.
Added James Wan: ‘Listen, I’ve done PG-13 movies and I’ve done R-rated movies. So I think it comes down to what’s right for the movie, and even though M3GAN is a scary movie, teenagers will will love it They will really like it, and I think it will speak to them in a big way.’
“Yeah, that’s right,” Jason added. “We wanted teens to be able to see the movie, ultimately.”

M3GAN is directed by Gerard Johnstone and stars Amie Donald, Allison Williams, Kimberly Cross and Ronny Chieng.
The film hasn’t received great initial reviews, scoring only a 6 out of 10 on IMDb.
M3GAN is scheduled for a wide release in the United States on January 6, though it opened in Los Angeles in early December.
