A driver who stopped his car in the middle of the highway to urinate has outraged motorists who called the action ‘a fatal accident’.
The photo showed a stationary blue Havel on the Pacific Motorway on the Gold Coast with the door wide open.
A man with a long blond ponytail, dressed casually in black shorts, stands meters away at the edge of the busy road as cars and trucks slow down to avoid an accident.
‘Absolute flog stops in the middle of the M1 and does this. Unfortunately, this is why there are fatalities,” the original poster of the image wrote.
The photo, posted to Facebook on Tuesday, showed a stationary blue Havel on the Pacific Motorway on the Gold Coast, Queensland, with the door wide open.
Another person wrote: ‘We couldn’t believe our eyes.’
‘The traffic was slow, but certainly not standing still and he was certainly not in a hurry.’
Others, however, had a very different view.
‘Nature waits for no one… By the way, how much has this slowed down your life? Six car lengths? He is doing well,” one person said.
Urinating in a public place is an offense under the Summary Offenses Act 2005 in Queensland law.
The maximum fine is $266.
Dangerous or not bad? On social media, motorists were divided over whether it was okay to stop a car in the middle of a lane to answer the call of nature
A Queensland Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia that stopping a car in the middle of a lane was illegal.
“Unless in an emergency, stopping on the highway is illegal and poses a significant risk to other road users,” they say.
The spokesperson said stopping could cause collisions that could lead to “serious injuries and fatalities.” Police are urging motorists to follow traffic rules to ensure everyone is safe.
They added that no arrest or charge had been made at this stage and asked witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
